With a newer technique in the market, the lack of blood group matching donors is no longer an obstruction for kidney transplantation. In a unique surgery performed in Hyderabad, transplantation of A+ donor (Wife) kidney to a B+ patient (Husband) was conducted successfully. This gave a reformed method and a way which can be done without the same blood group donors.

The hurdle is cleared with the implementation of the newer technique ABO-incompatible transplant. The ABO-Incompatible transplantation is an option for patients who fail to find a compatible donor in the family. Dr Vikranth Reddy of Care Hospital said, “Normally incompatible kidney transplant have antibody against the blood group to which are incompatible but Double Filtration plasmapheresis helps and transplant can be done.”

He further added saying, “ABO incompatible transplantation is an option for patients who fail to find a compatible donor either in the family, and this type of surgery bring hope to those in dire need of the organ. The pre transplant phase for ABOi Transplantation is tough because of 100% dedication from both the medical, surgical, Anesthesia team and the patient’s family”.

The transplantation was performed on Niladhan Singha on April 12 and his wife Luwanglembi Singha was the donor. Singha said post-surgery he was doing well without any complications.
