A tourist bus hit a divider and overturned near Mainpuri in UP early on Wednesday morning. The impact left 17 dead, and more than 35 injured. The injured have been moved to the hospital. Senior officials have rushed to the spot. Initial investigation suggests that the driver of the bus was speeding when the vehicle hit the road divider. The collision led to the bus being overturned. The accident happened in Mainpuri’s Danhara area.
The bus driver has lost his left leg and is currently admitted to a hospital in Saifai, the ASP said. He added that the private bus was carrying mostly laborers who work in brick kilns and were returning to their native villages. The ASP also said several casualties included people who were sleeping on the roof of the bus to escape the heat.
“The number plate of the bus revealed that it was registered in Farrukhabad (UP-76). It was going from Jaipur to Farrukhabad,” Singh said. The ASP added: “A number of casualties include those persons who were sleeping on the roof of the bus to escape from the prevailing heat.”
The injured were admitted to hospitals in Saifai and Mainpuri. Three of the injured passengers, who were admitted to a Saifai hospital, have been referred to Agra.
