Bhopal (BUIT) Barkatullah University Students Protest Turns Violent: Lack of Facilities
Barkatullah University is a university in Bhopal, India Spread over sprawling campus of 300 acres. Originally known as Bhopal University, it was renamed in 1988 after the great freedom fighter Prof. Barkatullah, who was born in the area. There are 100 academic programmes, covering postgraduate and undergraduate courses. There are 26 self-financing courses offered in the University. Barkatullah University has been accredited as a B category university by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council
From past couple of years, BU is running post-graduate courses in Fisheries and Aquaculture without any teaching staff, water or fish. The situation has deteriorated to the extent that a few departments have become haunted, with students even avoiding classrooms.This is happening when Barkatullah University (BU) is situated in the state capital.
BU is running a department without regular teachers. Pharmacy had 12 teachers working on a regular post but the department is left with only one teacher in 2016. When students contacted BU authorities they refused to comment. Owing to this, teachers and research scholars of physics department are teaching students of electronics department.
The ongoing protest by students over the lack of infrastructure and shortage of teachers. A high voltage drama ensued at the college campus, where the students staged the dharna, locked down the departments and gheraoed the administrative building. The students demanded to meet the vice-chancellor Prof MD Tiwari but he did not come out of his chamber. After the police officer asks him to meet students University VC comes out of the chamber and assured students to look into their problem and improve the facilities.
“A notice will be issued within a day to resolve the problems immediately,” Tiwari said.
The activists also raised the issue related to vacant posts of professors and associate professor, the department is not appointing the faculty, which is creating problems for the students to complete the course. There is no common room for girls in the college, Wi-Fi facility has not been provided till date. The institute also lacks library facility, primary medical care institute, extra curricular activities and many others.
