Vijayawada Famous Kanaka Durga Temple in news for performing Bhairavi Puja, a tantrik ritual as per media reports temple head priest Badrinath have admitted of conducting secret puja to Durga Devi idol on the midnight of Dec 26 (Navami). The Pooja was conducted by decking up Durga Devi in Mahisashura Mardini avatar hoping for some special powers. Temple Head Priests admitted that the Pooja was done against the customs, traditions of Indrakeeladari temple and said they have done as per the instructions of the temple EO Suryakumari.

Kanaka Durga Temple EO on Tuesday ordered an inquiry into the “Tantrik pooja” alleged to have been performed in the temple atop Indrakeeladri here in Vijayawada. It is learnt that Chief priest Badrinath Babu, another priest Pranav, one Ghantasala Parthasarathy, Amanchi Sujan from Guntur and three other helpers were said to be present. Amanchi Sujan, who is specialist in decking up avatars of Devi, have been brought to the city much earlier on a pre-plan.

The Vijayawada police took three priests of the Kanaka Durga temple – Pranav, Srujan and Raja — into custody and during the interrogation, The action against the temple’s executive officer Surya Kumari came within hours of her denying allegations of the tantric ritual.Ahead of the government shunting her out, she transferred Badrinath Babu to one of the smaller temples managed by the Kanaka Durga temple trust on the charges of flouting rules.

The incident took place on December 26 and came to light on December 28. There are allegations that kadamba prasadam was prepared in temple potu (kitchen) and the presiding deity was decked up as Kali to perform the Bhairvai puja. There is no clarity on how many authorized and unauthorized persons were present when the alleged ritual was performed.

The EO negated the reports saying no material despatched from the stores and prasadam was cooked in the kitchen.

Earlier, the temple priests performed ‘ashtha bandhanam’ closing the temple. The temple priests and management did not disclose the details.
