Kodangal Leader Telangana Congress working president A Revanth Reddy was arrested from his residence in an early morning raid on Tuesday. Police broke open the front door of Reddy’s house and whisked him away. Officials said that it was a pre-emptive arrest ahead of a public meeting of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao as Revanth Reddy had called for a bandh in Kodangal today and asked people not to attend the rally.
The police also took his brothers, gunmen and even the watchman of his house into custody. But the gunmen and watchman were later let off at Parigi, about 30km from Kodangal. Unconfirmed reports said Reddy had been taken to Shamshabad police station on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
Speaking to reporters after his arrest, Revanth Reddy’s wife, Geetha, said, “This is an attack on the people of Kodangal. At around 3 am, the police broke into our room and within a matter of five minutes, around 40 people forcefully took him away, the way they would take away a terrorist.”Geetha also alleged that the police personnel didn’t even show them their ID cards.
“We don’t know if they are Task Force, Intelligence or state police. One of them said they have ordered from higher officials,” she said, appealing to his supporters to stay peaceful.
“We are only making one appeal. It is an attack on Kodangal but we should not resort to violence. Let’s show the respect we have for Revanth Reddy, a son of Telangana, with our votes,” Geetha added.
As per Reports Following instructions from the Election Commission, the police imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) on Monday and Tuesday. In a notice to the Congress party, the state election body accused Mr. Reddy of calling for a protest to stop KCR’s campaign rally in Kodangal today.
The poll body said there could be trouble as Mr. Reddy’s supporters could try to disrupt the rally. Large gatherings have been banned in the constituency as a precaution, said Rajat Kumar, the state poll body chief told.
