Krishna River boat overturned : 19 dead bodies recovered so far


Krishna River : Shocking Accident Took Place Yesterday, a boat full of tourists capsised in the Krishna River in Ibrahimpatnam mandal, Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. A total of 19 bodies were recovered till now. As per Media Reports  accident took place in Krishna river about 25 km (15 miles) from Vijayawada city. Around 20 of the roughly 35 people on the boat were rescued and search operations were continuing, India’s National Disaster Response Force said. Some 30 troopers of the National Disaster Response Force, a 45-member team of the State Disaster Rescue Force and 60 members of the Disaster Response and Fire Services Department are at the spot for rescue operations.

Meanwhile  Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister Bhuma Akhila Priya Reached to the spot and ordered an inquiry into the incident.The unfortunate incident occurred at the confluence of Krishna and Godavari rivers. The passengers were going from the Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangamam to witness Pavitra Harati, a daily ritual attracting thousands of tourists.
A boat survivour in the incident also said that the boat operator was trying for ferry more passengers and that it was overloaded.The Andhra Pradesh state government has issued an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased.

It has come to light that none of the tourists was wearing life jackets – something which is in total violation of safety guidelines issued to boat operators in the region.  It is believed that the driver of the boat misjudged the depth of water in the fading light, thus leading to the mishap.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu,Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister Bhuma Akhila Priya and deputy chief minister reached to the accident spot to oversee the rescue operations and has directed police to rush additional force to help locate the missing persons.
