RK Studio houses the logistics of the RK Films production company, both established by and named after Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor in 1948. It is currently operational under the supervision of Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor. A spokesperson of the Kapoors said no member of the family was at the studio at the time of the accident. He also stated that the situation is now under control.

The massive fire broke out at Chembur’s RK Studio at around 2.30pm on Saturday. Thick dark smoke enveloped the entire area as flames swept through the basement of the sprawling studio, where Raj Kapoor, his siblings and children made a number of films over the decades.

According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), Work related to electrical wiring was ongoing at the studio when a small short-circuit resulted in the blaze. The fire was confined to 100×80 sq ft area on the ground floor of the studio building in the electrical wing. Six fire tenders and five water tankers have been pressed into service to douse the flames. However, Fire officials said that the blaze has been brought under control and no one has been injured in the accident.

Chief fire officer P Rahangdale said that the fire began at the decorative equipment in the studio. “As the items are highly inflammable, the fire spread very fast. We have managed to bring it under control,” he added.
