Russian Tourist Evangelin who visited to india on september 24th had gone to visit Kancheepuram temple from Chennai and a few other temples there.During his stay in Kancheepuram, he went to an ATM center to withdraw money but his ATM card’s PIN got locked.Evangelin struggled with the language barrier and cash crunch.He roamed around Kancheepuram and decided to sleep on a footpath near a temple. He woke up to a scene with several beggars who had gathered outside the temple.Having no money, he was compelled to sit with other beggars and spread out his cap to get some money.
Though the devotees spared money for him, they were surprised at the sight of a foreigner seeking alms and alerted the police. The police said“We checked his travel documents, passport and visa. All documents are perfectly valid. He had spent all his money and was not sure how to reach Chennai,” a police officer said. The Siva Kanchi police gave him Rs 500 and put him on a suburban train to Chennai. Police asked the man to get down at Egmore and take an autorickshaw to the Russian embassy in the City.
The matter finally came to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj through leading daily news paper and this what she tweeted in her official twitter account “Evangelin – Your country Russia is our time tested friend. My officials in Chennai will provide you all help”.
RUSSIAN DID NOT RESPOND TO OUR CALL: CONSULATE
Evangelin did not answer a call to his mobile to offer assistance, a Consulate official said today.
“He did not answer our call when we contacted him on his mobile,” Vice-Consul, Russian Consulate, Yury S Belov told PTI.
He said the consulate did not receive any call from him either and added that if they were contacted, “we will assist him in a proper way.”
