33 persons were feared dead and one more seriously injured after a private bus plunged into a 500 ft gorge in the mountainous Mahabaleshwar region in Satara district in western Maharashtra on Sunday, 147 km from here. Police earlier said that 10 bodies had been recovered. All the victims were either students or staff members of Vidyapeeth. The bus was ferrying them from Poladpur (Raigad) to Mahabaleshwar in Satara district.
The tragedy occurred sometime after 9 a.m. at the Ambenali Ghat near Poladpur when the bus slid off the mountainous road and crashed into the gorge. A superintendent of the varsity, Prakash Sawant-Desai, the lone survivor of the tragedy, managed to climb up and give information about the tragedy.
The rescuers are also currently trying to pull out survivors from the bus which rolled down near the ghat in Poladpur near Mahabaleshwar.
Earlier this month, a total of 48 people were killed and 12 injured in a bus accident in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district.
Forty-four people died on the spot while four succumbed to injuries after being taken to a hospital in Dhumakot. The injured were rushed to a local hospital from where they were flown to Rishikesh.
