Kerala Anti Vaccination Gang attacks Woman Health workers during drive


Malappuram : On Thuesday A nurse from the department of Woman Health has been manhandled by group of Anti Vaccination Gang at Edayur near Valancheri in the district on  during Measles Rubella vaccination drive.  As per Reports the nurse identified as Shyamala Bai, a nurse of the Edayur Prinary Health Centre was attacked by the group protesters against the vaccination drive at GLP School, Athipatta on Thursday evening. The injured nurse was admitted in Hospital with fractured hand. The attackers also damaged Shyamala’s mobile phone.

As soon as incident took place Valanchery police reached to spot and registered a case based on the complaint lodged by Dr Ali Mohammed, who led the medical camp. According to the police, the incident took place when the team members conduting their duty. The attackers alleged that the children were vaccinated without their parents’ consent.

Following the incident the Kerala Government Public Nurses and Supervisors Union has demanded stern action against the attackers and threatened to boycott the vaccination drive for not ensuring safety for health workers. The union has given an ultimatum to arrest the attackers by Friday otherwise would boycott the vaccination drive a press note by union said.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident, MES Central School at Tirunavaya witnessed ruckus as the protest by a group of parents against vaccination turned violent. The parents abused the health workers during the awareness programme.  “Some of them started protesting and one of them pulled my shirt,” said Dr  Moideen K, who accompanied the health workers as Indian Medical Association (IMA) representative.  Earlier, a school teacher was assaulted by protesters in Ponnani.
